There isn't a PPA for 2.29 on karmic yet:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit

Copying the lucid version to karmic in a PPA will fail without adding
copying additional packages such as gtksourceview2. Lucid will be
released in 2 months which will have gedit 2.30.
