jep, that's right. only, that the thing in between is enclosed in single quotes, and expands sometimes over 100 lines. So it is very unconvenient to have it not highlighted. But I just found out, that the awk mode in emacs 22 is able to deal with this. That was not the case in emacs 21.

I guess something like
sh -c "ls
echo $foo
whatever"
Which is strictly speaking a string, but still a piece of code.
