Thanks for the replies.
Yes, I meant more than one instance; different pid,
tmp files, settings, the works. I'll settle for
detached windows though. Ahh, a filename. I was trying
to spawn blank windows. That'll work great, thanks.
for ((crazy_idiot=100;crazy_idiot;crazy_idiot-1)); \
do gedit --new-window - ; done
FYI, 101 blank gedit windows take 38M w/graphical
toolbars off and 42M with on. Sigh.
'--new-document' is confusing. Am I using it wrong? If
I do 'gedit --new-document' it will open a new tab on
the last gedit window that had focus and add another
'untitled ##' page. If however I do 'gedit
--new-window --new-document' it makes _two_ 'untitled
##' pages. You cannot stack them 10 deep; any amount
of '--new-document' after the first one are ignored.
And lastly, as I've just been taught, you can't do
'--new-window' without a filename as it'll just open
to the last focused gedit window... Hmm.
re: tab sorting, I mean just that. Reorder the tab
positions.. based on name, or date/time accessed,
extension, etc... rather than just the order the files
were opened in. For people that only have 5 or 10
files open at once, they will never see the need.
Anyway, re: multiple instances, can it be done?
Because of a few annoying things that get me... If you
leave up a dialog awaiting input on another workspace,
you'll think the app locked. Until you find that
(sometimes buried) dialog and deal with it you cannot
use any gedit window. This isn't a gedit issue, of
course - only in the fact that it's the same instance
of the app. And if it really does lock, killing one
pid that kills 30+ open edits, ouch.
Turning on/off this tabbed behaviour would be nice. As
defaulting to new window instances. Someone (ok only
me) might like to launch a gedit window with no
toolbar and no tabs; eg. if you did File/New, you
would by default get a new window instance (or app
instance) that could contain it's own toolbar /
statusbar settings, etc. Instead of just remembering
what the last setting was for the whole app.
In fact I'll request this one: Since Shift+Ctrl+N is
not already in use, could it be for File/New but the
document in a new window? Think about it. :-)
Weirdnesses - is it just me? No matter how many
detached windows you spread around your desktop, the
Documents menu will always list all of them and not
just the ones local to that window. That could be a
preference setting. However... Search/Find will only
search through the focused page. That could be a pref
too, I guess.
Sorry, I ramble. Thanks for your time. Great
assistance!
