[gdm-list] Background image lost when waking from sleep

I posted this earlier, but have now installed KDE on the same machine. I have switched from GDM to KDM, and now I find:
KDE plasma resumes with background restored,
XFCE resumes with background ok,
GNOME and GNOME Classic resume with no background image, just the binary mess.
I presume that the same graphics driver is being used for all desktops, so where else can I look to pinpoint the cause?
