Did you include
session required pam_systemd.so
to /etc/pam.d/gdm-launch-environment ?
...
pam_unix(gdm-password:session): session opened for user paulparker by
(unknown)(uid=0)
Not sure wahat is happening here.
Looks like gdm-simple-greeter did work and yoy are trying
to log in as paulparker.
Did you add the same line as above to
/etc/pam.d/gdm ?
...
