...also, looking at the log files (syslog and /var/log/secure), which 
are much more detailed in this version of the modules, I can see there 
is a bug in either authconfig script (most likely) or the gdm-smartcard.

I am getting "argument card_only is not supported by this module" error 
messages - this is, I suspect, as a result of the execution of 
"authconfig --smartcard --update" which inserts various "[success=done 
ignore=ignore default=die] pam_pkcs11.so wait_for_card card_only" lines 
in at least 1 file - /etc/pam.d/smartcard-auth-ac
