Well this is sounding a lot more like wayland than an X extension...
Which I agree is totally the future, but maybe not the near future.

Sure, it's just a question of what's tractable, I guess.

FWIW, that's how gnome-screensaver works today.

The unlock dialog is handled by gnome-screensaver, and there's a big
"Switch User" button that jumps to GDM.
