Ah, joy!. Rodd, you have my eternal gratitude.

I did a clean build of 0.26.2 over the weekend, no changes, then did:
cd evolution; make extract; cd work/main.d/evolution-1.4.4/; 
rm wombat/Evolution-Wombat-*.[hc]; rm libwombat/Evolution-Wombat-*.[hc];
cd ../../..; make ; make install

(or a close approximation thereof - the syntax may not be exactly correct,
but the intent is :))

.. and I was greeted with a working evolution. Which means I can go
back to reading my email.

So it is possible to do it without messing around with CVS or
what-have-you.
