Unfortunately, there is no serious version checking of this nature in GAR.
If there's a nice, portable way of doing this, please send the info. :-)

Hold on a sec:

  "Mono, launched specifically to counter a threat to our freedom, is the
  free software project par excellence."

That statement is also very close to the truth (modulo 'specifically')...
