Hmm, I found the thread, however it didn't explicitly give the answer to
the question, so I'm posting my experience here so other can find it in
times of trouble ;)

The solution is simply to start a clean session, ie log out and log in,
and don't start any capplets. At this point you won't have a
gnome-settings-daemon running. Start a gnome-terminal, and from that run
gnome-settings-daemon in the background, ie

$ gnome-settings-daemon &
$ exit

Now save your session, and next time you log in, it will all work :)
