I am doing something similar with the same-gnome rewrite (which is
currently hung-up on fancy graphics issues) and I will use that to make
sure I get the semantics right.

The UI could definitely do with a little bit of reorganisation. However,
I do not subscribe to the idea that every detail should be able to be
turned on and off. Admittedly, gnometris allows the preview to be
toggled, but historically that is expected for tetris-like games.
