Re: Some ideas about gTranslator

Maybe we could we promote this idea in groups like GNOME Love, so it could be marked as a goal.

I'have some ideas to fix and improve the tool... if we can get any people interested in it, we could do a great job.

Thanks for answering Nacho :)

Hey Daniel,

yeah... probably this is not the right list to send this mail, anyway as I said before I would very
welcome more involvement from other people to try to develop gtranslator. Currently I didn't do
that much apart from small maintainership. If anybody wants to help is more than welcome and
I can help to review patches and provide ideas for the future development.

Regards.

Hi everybody,

I don't know if this list is the correct place to discuss it... if it isn't, please excuse me for the noise.

I've been using gTranslator for several years (since 2006, when I joined GNOME as a translator) and I'd like to improve it and speed up its development, since it is the only "official" translation tool for GNOME.

Some translators use Lokalize (previously KBabel) but... is it logical to translate GNOME with a KDE-based tool? I think GNOME should dedicate more efforts to improve and fix bugs in gTranslator. For example, there is a critical bug (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600387) opened more than 2 years ago, with no activity on it. Has nobody been able to review and fix it?

I'm not a developer, so I can't help sending patches o reviewing them, but I'd like to recruit a small developers team dedicated to clean bugs and add some improvements to gTranslators. Maybe in one or two months we could fix some important bugs and add new features (i.e. support for gtxml, so tags are checked automatically, as it is actually done with variables).

What do you think about it? Please note I'm not demanding anything from anyone, it's just an idea to improve gTranslator, so it be widely use by GNOME (and by other po-based projects) translators.

Many thanks

P.S. Tomorrow could be a glorious day if KDE translators used gTranslator to translate KDE ;-)
