There are several research lines that requires data from surveys. One of
the most clear is effort estimations, since it is the usual manner for
getting data about hours spent in developing software. We can correlate
these survey results with the CVS productivity, for example, that we can
measure using some tools and without annoying any developer ...

About results, the most complete work published around surveys to Free
Software developers is:

And also, a summer project is about to publish their conclussions. I
still have not any URL for giving you them, anyway I guess it will be
