I'm not one of the developers, so I can only guess about the design  
decisions.  My guess is that it was designed for left to right, and  
later someone added the ability to reverse direction, without thinking  
that this would put the "2011" at the end of the year instead of the  
beginning.  Personally, I think it would be good to center the "2011"  
in the year and put larger marks between the years.

Developers:  can this be taken as an enhancement request?  Let me know  
if there is someplace better for me to file it.
