My 0.02$ about this topic:
Making F-Spot able to adapt to:
* custom directory structure
* custom filenames
* versionning scheme (custom merging of 2+ pictures as versions for example)
would be a great plus for users. F-Spot now has some nice defaults, but those defaults might not fit some users needs. Any easy way we can get to make F-Spot more flexible is to be considered, IMO.
For example, I had to rebuild my whole photo database, from a previously F-Spot managed directory structure that contained some
* RAW pictures
* JPEG ones (developed from RAW)
* JPEG versionned ones derived from the above (with GIMP for example)
* some PNG ones.
I had great trouble (and still have) managing my new database, because
* there is no easy way to re-merge versions of my pictures
* PNG files do not carry EXIF, which places them in the wrong yyyy/mm/dd folder, based on modification date.
This is just one example of a situation in which a more flexible F-Spot would be appreciated.
I must say, tho, that I still can't imagine managing my pictures without F-Spot, keep on guys!

I'd argue that true shared/multi-user/machine access to the database and
photos repository is more in demand than the above.
Who really cares how the photos are stored if one is always using f-spot
to access them? IMHO, you were not meant to go trawling through the
structure that f-spot creates and if you need to, for whatever reason,
then a feature is missing from f-spot.
