The thumbnails aren't loaded all at runtime. Only the ones which are
visible on screen are in memory.
In memory you only have the strings related to the pictures.
I have ~24k photos, and I can work fine, but I have 1,5G of ram. When I
only had 500m life was VERY hard.
What slowes down f-spot very much is the size of the pictures you
handle. When I had the Fuji with ~1m per picture it was very fast ;)
