My thoughts:

2. the default view is arranging things by date - that's no good for my
photos which are organised by folder, and lots of them don't have a date
because they are scanned from a non-digital camera or taken with a
camera without the correct date. I suspect this is common with most users.

3. the folder view is not very helpful - I have organised my photos into
folder and f-spot will organise them by folder, but it insists upon
displaying all my photos on the same page rather than allowing me to
navigate through the folders.

I believe the first point is pretty moot. However points 2 and 3 seem
to (in a way) be the same problem. Basically how should F-Spot handle
files that are not structured in the "F-Spot way"?

I don't import into Photos and I'm not entirely happy with how they are displayed either because it's hard to tell where the photos in one folder end and another begins.  I've thought of implementing some way to add separators between folders (or dates in order by date).  At least for folders it would be nice to include the folder name there.  Haven't gotten around to it though.

Some kind of navigate folders may be helpful for some, but I can't say I've felt a need.  I would like to add an option to "Add folder name tag" for imports from the filesystem.  That way you can easily find the folder (in my case ordered by event) and it stays within the "F-Spot way".

As for point #2, it's basically arguing over defaults, and I'm not convinced that order by folder is the best default (even though its the one I use).  The default use case for F-Spot afaict is that the user plugs in his or her camera, the photos get imported into Photos and is then presented with a nice timeline of all the photos.  That being said, its a bit hard to find the order by option (there were various complaints about it on the ubuntu lists for example) so that could be improved.
