Andy,
It was intentional to use OR instead of AND, but it's definitely a
highly thought-about issue, and indeed the second oldest not-fixed bug
in f-spot is for this very thing
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139796). It would be very
simple to change the part of the code that joins the query terms to
join use AND instead, but the reason I believe it hasn't yet been
changed is that limiting the querying to a single boolean function is
not satisfactory.
I have worked on a patch (and am working with Larry to work out UI
issues) for this that allows users to create queries that invoke both
AND, OR, and NOT operators. I have attached the patch (as well as a
screenshot: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=53008&action=view)
to the above bug. Hopefully we can get the discussion around this
issue revived and get a much better solution into F-Spot soon.
