Thanks again. I have had some progress.

I can now see all my folders, and when I click on them, I see a list of emails, showing the From, Subject, 
and Date.
But if I click on any email in the list, I get an "Unable to retrieve message."  with the string (for 
example):
"Cannot get message 1632777049.3622_3644.Whizz from folder /home/larry/.local/share/evolution/mail/local: No 
such file or directory"

I did try looking for 1632777049.3622_3644.Whizz, but as far as I can see, it doesn't exist.

To clarify, I made a backup of the disk that was mounted on /home before the crash, and I have mounted it on 
/home again after re-installing MATE from a live image.

Have I lost all my emails?
