Hi,

you are using POP accounts? Apart from this question, I'm not sure I
understand your sentences correctly. You don't need to chose between
deleting immediately and keeping messages indefinitely, simply select to
delete the mails after one or more days. I chose 1 day for my accounts.

Edit > Preferences > Double-click a selected account > Receiving options
[x] Leave messages on server

  Delete after 1 (or more) days

(Note that 3.18.x is no longer supported. The current stable version is
3.22.)

This kind of usage pattern is exactly what IMAP was created to deal
with. Workarounds using POP and per-machines deletion policies are
kludges at best. I strongly encourage the OP to use IMAP if it's
available on his mail service.
