Pete did not recommend switching to Gnome for performance reasons. He
recommended testing with Gnome as Evolution is an integral part of the
Gnome desktop. It's certainly possible to run Evo without running the
Gnome DE (I run it under KDE) but it's a sensible thing to try in order
to narrow down the possible problem.
