Thanks for your suggestions, for a while I had this suspicion also. But
I don't think this is it. Sure there are some disappeared contacts with
umlauts in them, but there are also disappeared contacts without any
(visible) umlaut, and, what's more, also among the remaining contacts
are some with umlauts. 

So, again, any help is welcome. How can I obtain debugging info? Is it
e. g. possible to raise some verbosity level somewhere to get
information on what's going on in server/client communication?

I'd even dare to modify the source code to put in "debugging output
statements" and run the system with the modified code. But for this I'd
need detailed instruction on where to start. (I. e. what are the code
bits that do addressbook updating from a WebDAV ressource, and how to
they work?)
