Thank you. I always manage to leave something out.
I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.
I used the Evolution available from Ubuntu, it reports itself as
version 3.2.3.
The server is a POP server.

You need to give more useful information before anyone can help you.
*At
a minimum* always state:
a) What version of Evolution do you have (see Help->About)
and
b) What kind of mail server is this? IMAP, POP, Exchange, Groupwise,
whatever?
