By 'retrieve' do you mean get the messages from a server or just access the messages?
I tried importing, but the import takes forever and usually crashes/hangs without telling me what's going on. Is there any way to uncorrupt the Inbox and Outbox files? Is it possible that they are just fine and is there any way to import the files or uncorrupt them through the command line so that I can see what's going on? Each file is about 500 megs in size since it's 4 years of email. I'd like to be able to recover them.
If it is an MBOX you can Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Accounts -> Add ... and create a standand mbox spool file / directory and point it to where the old mailbox data is. Then you should be able to access the mailbox and move the messages.
