Using Evolution 2.28.x on a Ubuntu 10.04 machine.

I've set up a Google address book, and it works nicely in bringing in my
Google contacts. But the Nickname and Categories areas are grayed out.
Why is this?

        Hi,
Google backend in your version doesn't support those fields, thus the UI
disabled them to indicate they are not available. Newer version, like
3.4.x, support them.

Also, is it possible to run Evolution 3.x on my system? Ubuntu 11.x
burns up too much of my disk space -- I'm always low in disk space, and
it's very irritating.

I do not use Ubuntu myself, thus, as Patrick said, you may ask on their
forum(s)/list(s). I think there is some repo for it, but it brings in
all dependencies, and as you indicated you are low on disk space
already, then it's probably undoable for you, same as compiling
evolution (and all its dependencies) on your own.
        Bye,
        Milan
