[Evolution] Grayed-out areas in the contact manager

Using Evolution 2.28.x on a Ubuntu 10.04 machine.

I've set up a Google address book, and it works nicely in bringing in my
Google contacts.  But the Nickname and Categories areas are grayed out.
Why is this?

Also, is it possible to run Evolution 3.x on my system?  Ubuntu 11.x
burns up too much of my disk space -- I'm always low in disk space, and
it's very irritating.
