You never mentioned an error message before. What is the exact message?

error while expunging folder ".#evolution/Trash"
That's because you can't actually expunge the Trash folder because it's
a virtual folder that contains references to all the messages marked as
deleted in the other folders. Two things you could do to try and work
out what's going - first turn off "Hide deleted messages" - that will
make it obvious where all your deleted messages actually are; and second
in the Trash folder, add a "location" column to the listing - then you
will be certain where the deleted messages are located.
BTW, have you ever done File -> Empty Trash ?
