Thank you to everyone who responded - and all so quickly that I had not
expected.

I appreciate that for most of you in the European area the problem is
"old hat" and also your patience in answering me.

I have been trying for some time to totally migrate to Linux but the
language keys have been an obstacle as my wife is German, a translator
and communicates with Germany on a regular basis, hence the requirement.

She has become accustomed (after some time) to Windows format and if I
can't make it simple and easy enough to enter German or French
characters then I stand no chance no matter how good Linux is over the
alternative.

I will also try Matthais's method utilising the Windows key.

Anyway thanks again, I have got it started now and will progress from
there
