As I recall I could ping myisp and probably also pinged smtp.myisp.
How do I know if Evo connected? 

You can turn on debugging and look at the trace output (very long and of
course you have to understand it:

$ CAMEL_DEBUG=all evolution > DEBUG-OUT 2>&1 &

Or use wireshark if you're familiar with protocol sniffers.

You also need to consider policy in force on the net you're
connected
to. Some admins, especially in corporate networks, won't allow
connections to random external servers.

Seems odd as I was the only one in my group that experienced this
problem. 

Do the others also use Evo?
