Hi,

This is _very_ annoying!!

    Hi,
would you mind to open a bug report in http://bugzilla.gnome.org with
backtraces of the crash, so someone can look whether it's something
known and help you with your exact problem instead of pointing you to
some, maybe irrelevant, files? Please send here also a bug number you
enter, just for a reference. Thanks in advance.
Also, try to reproduce this while running evolution from console, after
evolution --force-shutdown
there's some possibility you'll see some related information there (but
not always).

To answer your questions:
your address book's setup is stored in gconf,
/apps/evolution/addressbook/...
but local address books are stored in
~/.evolution/addressbook/local
with all your contacts added there. Remote address books is quite
different story.
    Bye,
    Milan

How can I get the backtraces. When crashing I only get the following popup window message:
Evolution error:

The evolution addressbook has quit unexpectedly.

Your contacts for file:///home/user/.evolution/addressbook/local system
will not be available until Evolution is restarted.

Next step is to start evo manually in a terminal to see if something
more shows up.
More info:

1) Stopping evo:
evolution --force-shutdown
Shutting down evolution-data-server-2.22 (Evolution Calendar file and
webcal backend / Evolution Addressbook file backend)
Shutting down evolution-alarm-notify (Evolution Calendar alarm
notification service)

2) Starting evo manually from a terminal:
CalDAV Eplugin starting up ...
evolution-shell-Message: Killing old version of evolution-data-server...
** (evolution:18813): DEBUG: mailto URL command: evolution %s
** (evolution:18813): DEBUG: mailto URL program: evolution
e-data-server-ui-Message: Unable to find password(s) in keyring (Keyring
reports: No matching results)
e-data-server-ui-Message: Key file does not have group 'Passwords-Mail'

3) Giving imap password in popup.

Adding a new email address and starting a new mail: Result: The
address bok is empty)

Terminal output:
(evolution:18813): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow is too large to allow the
use of shape masks or shape regions.

(evolution:18813): e-data-server-ui-CRITICAL **:
e_source_combo_box_set_active_uid: assertion
`gtk_tree_row_reference_valid (reference)' failed
Clicking on contacts: The addressbook is diplayed.
Searching for the newly added entry: The new entry is not there

5) Back to mail and the to contacts: The error on the crashed
addressbook given earlier is displayed.
No more terninal output.

6) Stooping evo:
evolution --force-shutdown
Shutting down evolution (Evolution Shell)
Shutting down evolution (Evolution Shell)
Shutting down evolution-exchange-storage (Evolution Calendar Exchange
backend / Evolution Addressbook Exchange backend)
Shutting down evolution-alarm-notify (Evolution Calendar alarm
notification service)

I will file a bugreprt later, it seems you have to register to do that.
