I don't know that it "expects" anything explicitly, but implicitly it
would assume it can create and delete files and modify them, plus look
for them in folders. Thus the directories would need at minimum Read,
Write and Execute permission for the Evolution user, and the individual
files would need Read and Write.

If the Maildir setup is being used as a maildrop by some daemon (rather
than just by Evo itself) then said daemon would also need at least
similar permissions.

I suspect you're going to get more precise answers by consulting Maildir
docs rather than under Evolution, as none of the above is Evo-sepcific.
