You may also need to do the reverse: set Iceweasel as your preferred web
browser in gnome-control-center.

i'd already tried that
it seems a reboot (after doing a system update) did the trick. And when using KDE, gnome-control-center is not necessary. Both features are working with it having been removed. But it does seem that for some reason iceweasel doesn't want to play nice.
