Ahh, ok.
So, is it necessary to log out? That is, I'm wondering if it would beenough to just drop into a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1). Does beinglogged in change something that Evolution needs?

The point of logging out is to kill the Gconf daemon, which otherwisewould be accessing some of the files you're changing.
