Ahh, ok.
So, is it necessary to log out? That is, I'm wondering if it would be
enough to just drop into a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1). Does being
logged in change something that Evolution needs?
The logging out part shuts down the GConf daemon, which maintains an
in-memory cache of your GConf settings. Shutting down the daemon
flushes the in-memory cache to your ~/.gconf files.
Technically you can do this without logging out of your GNOME session,
but it's easier and safer if you just log out.
