Is any work being done on integrating Evo with alternative backends such
as eGroupWare? I've tried to configure Evo per the information I found
on the eGroupWare site; however, on both 2.6.x and 2.8.x, it crashes,
although in different ways.

Not everyone uses, or wants to use, Exchange; however, server-based
calendaring and task management is, IMO, a core app for Linux desktop
adoption, and would provide the SME market with another tool to offer
clients.

I've managed to get KOrganizer working with eGW, but it is not an
altogether satisfactory solution for an Evo user (and fan).
