The Application "evolution" has quit unexpectedly.

You can inform the developers of what happened to help them
fix it. Or you can restart the application right now.

then please inform the developers by using that shiny button in that
dialog (it will run bugbuddy which will provide you with a stacktrace,
and by taking a look at a stacktrace a developer can hopefully find out
what went wrong - i hope that the button already exists in your
distribution (evolution 2.0.2 is *pretty* old, that's why i can't
remember - isn't there at least an update to 2.0.4?).

After multiple restart attempts, it is clear that evolution is
effectively dead.

if it is the mailer component crashing, a common cause is a
particular mail that crashes while being rendered. to prevent
rendering of the mail, you can disable the preview pane and set the
message display to 'source', which will display the raw message.

command to disable the preview pane:
        gconftool-2 --set /apps/evolution/mail/display/show_preview --type bool 0

command to display the raw source message:
        gconftool-2 --set /apps/evolution/mail/display/message_style --type int 2

you can also try to start evolution with another component than the
mailer, for example by running "evolution -c tasks".

PPS.

Just moved the .evolution directory and the evolution directory to
some other place and started afresh (although somehow it knew
where the mail server was). So at least there is some mail
service but all the old messages are unaccessible.

sure, because you just removed all your old messages.

cheers,
andre
