mime/html mail makes things somewhat more complex unfortunately, so sometimes the data gets transformed in ways in which you can't easily scan for "-- ".

It's "-- ". Note the trailing space.
RFC ???? says that the MUA is supposed to strip out everything
after the "-- ".

I've noticed that too, even when there is a "^-- ".
