Given that Evolution apparently has no SM capabilities then am I taking
a risk to leave Evolution open when logging out in terms of potentially
corrupting my email or should I first quit Evolution then log out?

Is there a definitive answer on this?

You wont corrupt mail - in any storage format.

You probably wont even lose any e-mails you are editing, since they are autosaved fairly often.

You may lose 'unread' status and the like, for the current folder, as such information is only saved occasionally, e.g. after changing folders, or emptying the trash, etc.

You may end up with duplicate emails, if you were in the process of downloading pop mail.

You may also end up with evolution re-starting slowly, as it re-indexes/scans your mailboxes, if it was in the process of updating them when it shutdown (only happens if you're getting mail at the time).

In short, if evolution is quiescent, at worst you may lose which emails were read in the current folder.

I forcibly shut-down evolution very frequently (many times a day), and I have very few problems.  I'm using mailbox format.
