Thanks for your reply andre.
I am using evolution 2.0.2, alarms for any event in my personal calendar
goes off. But so far i have been unable to get an alarm for Birthdays
and Annivarsaries., I have tried setting the default alarm before any
appointment, but it doesn't have any effect.
Am i missing an option somewhere?

the answer depends on which evolution version you are using... 2.0.x
should be really easy, 1.4.x hasn't any obvious support for it (if you
mean "entering a birthday in the contact editor and automatically remind
me of it"). so i'd really update to 2.0.2, there you have to activate
the calendar named "birthdays & anniversaries" (grr, why isn't that
string translated by the way?) in the calendar view (2.0.x supports
