So the short answer is "yes": Marking as "read" when opened in a separate window is [the] behavior [that I want]
So obviously you and I feel differently about this, but to me the thing that should govern is the setting of the "mark as read after n seconds" option. Like many here, I receive a huge amount of email. In most [v]folders, the way I deal with this is to mark as read (Ctrl-K) any message I actually want to keep for reference. After I've reviewed a folder, I hide read messages, select all [which are "unread" but reviewed and that I want to get rid of], and delete. Works great. I would note that it's a lot faster to move through messages with the next/back buttons in a separate open window than in the preview pane. Once you track to other messages, evo obeys the "mark as read after n seconds setting" (ie, in my case, it is deselected as I don't want them auto marked as read). So for me, the fact that the message opened is marked read, but no others are, is contrary to my wishes [as expressed by the Mail Preferences option setting], is jarring and a pain in the ass to work around. I would think that we can both be accommodated - if "mark as read after n seconds" is selected with n = 0.0 you would get your insta-marked-as-read behaviour; for me, I would have that option unselected, and there should be no automatic marking as read regardless of whether I see a message in a preview pane or in a separate message window. NotZed said something about this being addressed in 2.0.3, but I was unclear what he was getting at. If a dev wants to jump in and tell me the way it is, please do - and I won't bitch about it if its not the way I want it - just would like to know how it is supposed to be. AfC Sydney
