Advanced Settings UIs were done away with (do you remember that Nautilus used to have one and everyone screamed about usablity and finally it was removed and banned by the HIG?)

I agree, not zed.
Little things like that take up more visibility than they're worth, and
on the balance, that kind of feature would not be worthwhile.
All the same, have you considered a separate "Advanced" settings UI?
