That still begs the question: what is and where can I find my autoconf
macro directory?  If I'm asking in the wrong place, can someone redirect

You will also need config.guess and config.sub, which you can get from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/config/.

Running intltoolize...
patching file po/Makefile.in.in
Running libtoolize...
You should add the contents of `/usr/share/aclocal/libtool.m4' to
`aclocal.m4'.
Running aclocal -I /usr/share/aclocal/gnome2-macros  ...
