I have been using cyrus imap for years now and it is rock solid

It is, but as hinted by NotZed, Evolution IMAP is rather fragile. The
typical case for me is when I filter huge amounts of mail (I have lots
of filters to colorize mails, and if there are some hundreds mails in a
folder the ctrl-A ctrl-Y sequence often makes Evo hang on a "pinging
imap server" until a too long timeout occurs). This is workarounded if
you set a low maximum IMAP command length (I have a patch somewhere for
that) but IMHO shows a problem somewhere.

I used Evo 1.5 (from redcarpet on RH9) at work connected to a Cyrus and
an Exchange IMAP servers, and it's worth its "unstable" name. I use Evo
1.4 at home (from debian/sid, which contains my patch) connected to the
very same servers, and it's stable and pleasant to use.
