this indeed would be a great ui, no need for options because the

Even with the smiley this sounds extremely arrogant.

I'm sorry you don't agree, but if you really feel hundreds of (most
likely untested) options is best, there's always other software.

I really like one of Larry Wall's (perl creator) commonly said phrases
(and one of the Motto's of Perl):

        * Keep Simple Things Simple and Make Complex Things Possible

I personally can't think of a better idea to keep in mind when designing
software (of any type). Don't ignore the power users (yes, some people
really use those VCR features), keep simple things simple and make the
power uses enable "power use mode" (which hopefully does not mean we
have to go as far as "you are a power use, learn C and hack up the
code :-)"

several "designing the perfect ui" documents I've read say that more
options means bad ui, and that limiting the number of options makes a
better ui.

If you assume the typical user is a monkey.

???

this can be done by choosing more sane defaults (which by
popular opinion we seem to have done)

Oh yeah, popularity is a real wonderful measure of excellence.

how else would you judge? you can't please everyone, so if your target
users are happy then you've done your job well.

If I wanted someone else to decide how I should use my computer I would
be running MacOS.

I'd be using it except it lacks software I use (altho WoW is on MacOS so
maybe not ;)

Later,
Jeff
