Oi!  The question goes un-answered.  How does it check for spell-check
availability.  I was just trying to get a quick dirty answer so that I
could investigate myself.

Anyway:

$ uname -a
Linux addiction 2.4.21 #19 SMP Wed Jun 18 23:23:15 EDT 2003 i686 i686
i386 GNU/Linux

....It was RedHat 8 when this beatings began last year, but at this
point it's sort of ambiguous since i've installed most of the RH9 RPMs
that didn't chain-depend.
