The code that implemented it was weird and buggy and hard to maintain,
so it was removed.

(The reason you can still use grouping in the task list is that the task
list uses ETable, while the message list uses ETree, even when you're
using the flat, non-threaded view, because otherwise there would have to
be a lot of duplicated code, once for the tree case and once for the
table case.)
