Some success to report!
Short answer: kill gconfd-1 first.
Mark Gordon suggested:
try running /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 and see what it says. My guess is
that it will complain, and the error message(s) might be useful.
This ran fine with no explicit problems, but evo-1.3 and nautilus still
had problems (evo crashed, nautilus complained about the missing CORBA
server but ran).
But "px aux | grep gconfd" revealed that gconfd-1 was still running in
the background (does evo-1.2 require it/start it up?). So I killed it
and ran evo-1.3. Success!! I started up nautilus and no complaints!
So I would guess that this is the answer.
BTW Gunther and Mark also talked about the directory ~/.camel-certs as I
had the initial error message:
(evolution-1.3:24590): camel-WARNING **: could not load cert
/home/migod/.camel_certs/ab:05:41:71:58:a4:c1:ba:21:88:8d:ab:fd:35:69:72:
No such file or directory
In fact there was no such directory -- let alone file -- in my home
dir. But now that I have started up evo-1.3 successfully there is, so
it looks like it was a bootstrapping issue. Once I started evo-1.3, and
accepted the SSL certificate for my imap account, it was automagically
created.
Thanks for the advice!
