Thanks, I downloaded his software and ran it. I now have a directory
full of files, one file per contact, in vcf format.
Now how do I get all those files into Evolution? I don't want to import
each one separately (there are over 100). I tried concatenating them
all into one file and importing that one file, but that didn't work.
(Or maybe I just didn't wait long enough?) I tried mailing the files
to myself (hoping that maybe Evolution would automatically recognize
the contents) but that didn't work either.
Do you have any suggestions for importing lots of vcf files into
Evolution?

You might try bbdb-vcard-export.el to export your Big Brother Database
to vcards, and then import the vcards into Evo via File -> Import.
bbdb-vcard-export.el can be found at:

I've never used it, but it might work. :-)

Is there a way to add a contact to Evolution via the command line?
If so, I could write a perl script to read my .bbdb list of contacts
and invoke evolution for each one.

I have a lot of email addresses in my .bbdb file from when I was using
the mail reader "vm" in xemacs. Is there any way to import those into
Evolution or convert them automatically into Evolution Contact lists?
