i believe this is explained in the manual.

the virtual folder only updates itself when you switch away from it.

this is so in normal operation, you use that folder to read your unread
mail, andwhen you come back to it, its refreshed. you can also do an

It does not get refreshed whenever you come back to it, only when the program
is shutdown and launched. I am going to try the "expunge" feature.

expunge to force a refresh.

this is so that you can actually use it, and dont click on a messageand
have it vanish instantly as its status goes from unread to read,it then
selects the next unread message, and basically reads the whole mailbox
itself.

I believe that the proper policy should be to refresh the contents of the
virtual folders whenever:

a.Their definitions are modified by the user,
b.Whenever the user visits a virtual folder,
c.Whenever new messages are retrieved into the local mailbox (inbox).

The latest happens for all other virtual folders - UNREAD, as defined in my
older message, does not get refreshed after each retrieval.

I believe that it has to do with how the program manages the
"status-is-not-read" condition in the virtual folder definition.

I have setup a virtual folder in Evolution (Rel.1.2.2) as follows:

Criterion = "status - is not - read",
Execute actions = "if any criteria are met",
vFolder sources = "with all local folders",
on source file "file:///home/panos/evolution/local/inbox".

At first it shows all of my unread messages. If I then go to some other
folder, read some unread messages and come back to the "UNREAD" virtual
folder, the messages, that I have read, are still still shown in this
folder (marked as read).

I have to left-click on the virtual folder's name, select "Properties"
and click "OK" (without changing anything in the folder's definition),
in order for the folder's contents to be refreshed and, then, only
unread messages are shown.

I think the behavior of the program should be improved in this area:
refreshing of virtual folders' contents should be triggered whenever the
status of a message gets modified by the end-user (e.g., from "unread"
to "read").
