Thanks for the feedback.  I just installed aspell-en-0.33.7.1-12 on my
system and no change.  I still don't get an option to enable spell
checking.  rpm listing now give the following results - 

aspell-0.33.7.1-16
aspell-en-0.33.7.1-12
gnome-spell-0.5-1.ximian.3
pspell-0.12.2-14

What else should I try?
